What is meditation?


Meditation is an opportunity for us to take some time out to sit in gentle silence to restore our equilibrium and find peace. It is about focusing our mind inwards on an object or concept instead of to the outside world with all its problems. Once learnt, it is a valuable gift we can give ourselves whenever we need it.


There is a common misconception that to meditate we need to empty our mind of thoughts.  However that is impossible for humans to achieve!  What is possible is to let our thoughts pass by without giving them attention whilst we keep focused on one object or concept. Then the mind can go deeper and relax into a special quiet space.  


There are many different ways to meditate. For example, focusing on the flame of a candle, either watching the flicker or concentrating on the colour at its base; listening to a guided journey; chanting a special sound or mantra.  


Jandi Meditation


The meditation we teach is based upon sound. Thousands of years ago meditation teachers in India and the Far East used specific sounds (called mantras) that have a beneficial effect on the mind and body. We can still use these techniques today.  


We teach a simple meditation technique that involves closing your eyes, watching the breath and saying mantras to yourself. These have a relaxing effect on the mind and body, thereby reducing stress. The meditation is non-religious.


Relaxation


Most people these days seem to have busy and often stressful lives. Relaxation techniques can help to alleviate stress and the anxiety, depression and insomnia which can result. Jane teaches a Deep Relax class at East Sussex International Spa, Little Horsted, Sussex. She also teaches relaxation and meditation classes for the Yoga Society at Sussex University.
